Disabling Protected Mode allowed the files to open.Note that the grayed-out icons with "X" in the corner were present for various file types. Held back by possibility that more emailed PDF attachments may be written by more recent version and 9x might not be able to read them all. Select the General section and uncheck the box to Enable Protected Mode at Startup.
