I'm loving that these Thinkpads are both durable and maintainable (even if they are totally slow now). It takes a while to open programs and windows sometimes (you don't forget what machine you're on, let's not exaggerate too much), but once things open and load, it feels snappy To start viewing messages, select the forum that you want to visit from the selection below. Those errors indicate a bad CMOS battery.
Loading... I'm a senior citizen, so if I can do this, anyone can. If memory serves, the first time the CMOS battery in my 600 went dead, it threw a 192 for the fan. You ROCK!
It came with XP preinstalled, so I woul dhave to assume it has the latest version on it as that was required for XP was it not? I checked the pins & bent them a bit to make sure that when I reinserted the plug that the pins would make contact with he plug. Thank you. It turns out the CMOS battery was the problem. Thanks a ton man!
It is my understanding thst if the CMOS battery is weak or dead the fan won't blow cooling the CPU - hence shut down and error message. I now have 3 error codes: 00173 00192 00163 So I guess the battery might have been fine and the 00192 error for the fan could be a bad fan or i can click on ok or cancel and >they both do the same thing, basically the ok and cancel button >disappear and then i can do nothing but restart the computer Yes, an out of time clock on your desktop can mean you have a virus, so it's worth doing a through scan, but in most cases it's a dying cmos battery. Many people have had the same problem with a "good" used battery.

Having just been inside my 600 last weekend, there's definitely no magic to the fan (and it almost looks as if you could replace the fan itself without changing the heatsink/duct the problem was indeed the battery; i took it out and the computer works great, except now i can't disconnect it from the power cable.
