the system hangs (meaning, it stops responding) when i run "Verify Disk" or "Repair Disk" on the backup disk. In my experience this only fixes things for a month or two. Unfortunately, I can't be of any help with the rest of your comment about class action lawsuits. I am running Snow Leopard. If this isn't the case and you really do have two different sets chewing up your precious space, I recommend you launch Airport Utility and do some cleaning.
