Examining the console logs as you suggested shows no entry at 11:02 or any other time the backup was skipped. I bought a new 3TB Sata3 drive for my iMac and (after making sure Time Machine was up to date), following instructions from Youtube, installed it correctly. You might get a job offer to help the Apple team in their fruit department. Open Disk Utility and select the disk where your backups are to be located.
HELP! Several subsequent attempts also failed with the same error.Since it was my first time backing up to TM, I decided to reformat the external drive (a Maxtor 1TB drive, not TimeCapsule), Realizing it was going to take Time Machine quite a while to copy 5.3 GB wirelessly to the Time Capsule I shut the MBP's screen about 80% of the way and I did a lot of research to see if I could move all my backups from the Firewire drive to Time Capsule and determine it wasn't worth the time.

It took a loooong time. I was having this issue and found that it was indeed Growl interfering in some way - once I removed Growl (and I was using the latest 1.1.3) - the problem Does Time Machine Work In Sleep Mode Unfortunately that didn't work for me- its still goes through all of them. Caffeinate Time Machine Oh well.

The fact that a ‘backup' can fail so dramatically betrays a level of incompetence that is unfathomable. Perhaps someone who backs up to local drives could weigh in on this. Maybe USB errors or some sort of disk error. I used a ' in the name of the drive, as in "peter's drive". There is a fundamental conflict between the WD Drive utilities and Apple's sleep mode.
