Several functions may not work. A really simple solution is to open the terminal and type: rsync -avu ~/ /Volumes/backup_disk/backup_folder replacing 'backup_disk' with the name of your external hard drive and 'backup_folder' with the name of Navigate to Applications - Utilities and double-click Terminal. How is implemented the GUI of Vim if is a program that runs on terminal? I found mounting the Time Machine volume either using it's FQDN or IP address then setting up TM gets around this issue, mDNS is out of the picture. Download Stellar Phoenix Mac data recovery software and upload the image and start recovery of the Time Machine hard drive. Haven't finished a full backup yet, but certainly got further than ever before!Thanks for the help!

In other words, Time Machine would not back it up and there were no apparent options to make it do so. useful reference I'm pasting the relevant logs below. This is a waste of space, but at least I didn't have to reformat the drive. The senior advisor used a remote access function and directed me on the latest fix which included re-formating and re-indexing the external HD and making some adjustments in time machine's system

I expect an Apple Tech or a Senior Advisor to be sufficiently trained and capable of resolving what appears to be a problem publicly shared by a number of Apple users. Two are designated to be Time Machine backups, and one is used for manual backups. Any other ideas?

A few folks have been successful with it, but it's not a matter of just copying the files from one place to another. In terms of the logs below, I put a manual break in there between when I removed / re-added the disk. It did take a long time both to mount the drive and then do the hdutil mounts apparently due to disk verification.Thanks for this most useful post! The logs show 269.28 GB available on line 9 which makes sense because using the shell script I had the sparsebundle made for 270 GB. Yes, my password is: Forgot your password? for networked drives, TM seems to want to create the sparcebundle on a non-existant duplicate of the mounted drive. What could an aquatic civilization use to write on/with?
